Just a Glass of Water

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: “How heavy is this glass of water?”
Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”
She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.”
It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses. As early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night. Remember to put the glass down!

Step Away From the Madness

What trap are you caught in?
It could be a personal situation, relationship or issue which you’d rather not think about.  Or it could be something that has your full attention way more than it should. Eventually, we all reach a point where we are so caught up in the drama of our everyday lives, or the lives of others, that we no longer can feel or think.
That’s when it’s time to stop what we are doing and seek tranquility.  Oh, to seek an atmosphere of calm, stillness and serenity.  A place where our emotions and thoughts will allow us to re-discover who we are and where we are going.
Allow yourself to step away from the madness and frenzy of life and step into balance and awareness.

Thank You Would be Enough

Do you ever stop and think about what you are thankful during the day? What are you really thankful for?  It’s really easier to complain about things not working or how your life isn’t going will.  Hey, why complain?  No body listens anyway.  Right? No one wants to listen to a complainer.  Those type of people can suck the life out of you. Rather than complain, tell the next person that asks you how you are doing, “I am marvelous!”  Then wait for their reaction.  It may surprise you.
So, what are the things that you are thankful for …. those most important things in your life? Sure, we all can think of  things like our family, spouse or significant other, the roof over our head, the sunshine . . . but what about the things that we don’t think about all the time.
How many things do we take for granted?  How about electricity?    Interesting that I wrote that, because just the other day, our electric went out for about 45 minutes.  The entire neighborhood was dark.  Just see how attached your are to electricity and how habit forming it really is when you walk into a room and flip on the light switch.  Or you decide that now would be a great time to have a cuppa tea, and oh duh, the microwave doesn’t work.  When will it come back on?  Are we living in the reality of a “Trigger Effect”?
How about our cars?  We don’t think about it every day but when it breaks down and leaves you stranded by the side of the road or you have to leave it in the shop for a few days, then you appreciate its usefulness.  It’s just amazing to me to think that we can get from point A to point B with everything working properly and getting us there. Then there’s our houses, children, our family, pets, appliances, our computers, our health….
When you think about it …. we really have an abundant number of things to be thankful for in our lives.  Isn’t it amazing that we have clean drinking water that comes out of the tap every time you turn it on.  While you may not drink it because of the poison toxins that are added to it (like fluoride … that’s a story for another day), you don’t have to walk four miles to the watering hole like women in Africa, where it is a way of life, carrying it home, balanced on your head.
Which brings me to another point.  I am reading the book Abundance by Peter Diamandis (creator of the X Prize Foundation and Singularity University) and Steven Kotler (journalist, author and director of research for the Glow Genome Project).  We found it in on thrift shop book shelf, yet when I started reading it, it was nothing what I expected.
What I was expecting was more of a self-help book on how to find abundance but it goes into details about today’s philanthropists, entrepreneurs and innovators who have been empowered to solve the challenges of humanity.  Individuals like Ray Kurzweil, Dean Kamen, Vint Cerf and Robin Dunbar to name a mere few highlighted in this book.
Look around you for a few minutes.  You are surrounded by abundance and blessings.  Paper, scissors, pens, calculators, business cards, printers, gadgets, tables, chairs, shelving, clean and hot shower water, flushing toilets, cooking utensils, level ground, sidewalks, plumbing, containers  and on and on.  How did all this come to be?  Someone had to see the need, invent it, fund it, produce it, take it to market, get you to use or buy it, etc.
Allow this moment to be one of gratitude and thankfulness for abundance.  What 5 things are you grateful in your life? See what happens to your world when you practice counting your blessings instead of complaining about them.

This “nature” deer is definitely unique.  I have photographed it many times and always laughed to myself at how interestingly it looks like a deer.  The photo was taken in Craig, Alaska, on Prince of Wales Island.  I wonder if any Sitka Black-tails ever noticed it.  It might frighten even a human that came upon it at dusk or in the dark.
